A Typical Day at
Meeting House Nursery School
The teachers plan a program that is developmentally appropriate, focusing
on the "whole child" in terms of the emotional, social, cognitive
and physical development of each child. Teachers use themes to prepare
the environment for a day of play and learning. Typical themes might include
"Community Helpers," "Lost in Space," "All Things
Eric Carle," and "Life in the Rainforest."
While
each classroom's daily schedule is planned to meet the needs and developmental
level of the children in it, a typical day in all of the classrooms will
offer a balanced program that includes a variety of indoor and outdoor
play options.
Free Choice Time:
(playing in the interest centers)
Play options include dramatic play, small manipulatives (puzzles, construction
toys), art experiences, sensory activities, science experimentation, cooking
projects, large muscle equipment and books.
Group Time:
Group experiences include sharing, stories, musical experiences and games.
This is a time that encourages the child to learn the social skills of
expressing ideas, listening and cooperating in taking turns.
Snack Time:
A mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack is provided by the school.
Snacks are planned in accordance with the nutrition standards set by State
Licensing. Menus are posted in the kitchen. Snacks served at Meeting House
are peanut and tree nut free.
Outside/Large
Motor Activities:
Weather permitting, children play outside on the playground at least once
per day. Opportunities for climbing, running, sand play, organized group
games, riding toys and taking walks are available.
Music & Movement:
Music and movement are a regular part of the classroom curriculum. Classroom
teachers, with the support of our Curriculum Resource Teacher, include
singing, musical instruments, listening to recorded music and dance and
movement activities in their daily planning. The school also plans performances
by local musicians and performers through out the school year.
